Bear Hunting in Peterborough

Peterborough Cathedral's painted wooden ceiling

20 June 09:  We're Going on a Bear Hunt opened in Peterborough last weekend - a stomping first show with a great audience and we're off - 279 more to go over the next 7 months...  First impression of the city: lots of tattoos in Peterborough.  Second impression, after 3 days: mixed.  A techie at the Key Theatre there told us "We're a WORKING CLASS theatre in a WORKING CLASS town with WORKING CLASS people". Nothing wrong with being proud of your heritage, but declaring it like you're challenging everyone else to a fight is unnecessary. Katie Sykes, our fabulous designer, said (under her breath) "I suppose we're a middle class company making middle class theatre for middle class children - there's gonna be a clash..."  The canalside area by the theatre was lovely, and the Cathedral in Peterborough, with a painted wooden ceiling, is beautiful (pictured above). But you gotta hate town planners who put a ring road and a shopping mall between the railway station and the town centre – what a way to blight your population for years and years and years. And that was Peterborough.
